Small Market Independent Newspaper Project

The project aim is to assist thirteen small market newspapers, seven papers selected each year, to better serve their communities by teaching their respective staff the knowledge required to improve journalism skills, general management, advertising, marketing and distribution, as a means to gain financial and therefore editorial independence.

Journalists Unions in the Defence of Professional and Social Rights
Project duration: November 05-June 2006
This project was designed to increase the independence of the media through the strengthening of journalists’ unions and to improve their capacity to defend journalists’ rights.

Human Rights Advisers in Prisons
Project duration: November 2005 – December 2007
This project supported the introduction of human rights advisers in the Russian prison system. The implementing partner has been working with the Russian Federal Prison Service (formerly GUIN) for several years.

School for Public Inspectors of Prisons
Project duration: July 2005 – March 2008
This project extended a system of public prison inspectors (drawing on the model of the UK Independent Monitoring Boards under the Home Office) to areas of Siberia, Northern and Far Eastern Russia, culminating in a bill passed by the State Duma in April 2008.

Roma Rights Challenges to Hate Speech
Project duration: July 2005 – July 2006
This project extended a system of public prison inspectors (drawing on the model of the UK Independent Monitoring Boards under the Home Office) to areas of Siberia, Northern and Far Eastern Russia, culminating in a bill passed by the State Duma in April 2008.

Strengthening Human Rights Capacity in the Russian Federation
Project duration: July 2005 – March 2008.
The project developed the capacity of NGOs and lawyers within the Russian Federation to apply to the European Court of Human Rights thereby enabling victims of human rights abuses to obtain redress.

Community Policing in Russia: Development of NGO – Police Partnership
Project duration: April 2006- March 2009.
The project goal is to establish a system of training for police officers on the issues of prevention of community and domestic violence and collaboration on this issue with relevant municipal institutions and NGOs; and also to introduce the mechanism of referral of victims of community and domestic violence.

Monitoring and Education as a tool of torture prevention in Nizhny Novgorod
Project duration: July 2007 - December 2008
The project seeks to develop the torture prevention capacity of the legal and judicial community, involving prosecutors, judges, lawyers, police officers and students. The main aim of the project is to encourage future state agents and attorneys to respect individual rights, including the right to freedom from torture, right to life and right to effective remedy.

Raising Awareness of Media Law Issues among Local Radio Stations, Radio Journalists, and Online ‘Citizen Journalists’ in Russia’s Regions
To promote respect for good governance and human rights by promoting international values: supporting the rule of law, pursuing dialogue on human rights issues, engaging with civil society, and encouraging democratic reforms and sustainable socio-economic policies.
