Global Threat Reduction
One of the UK Government’s highest priorities is countering proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the world through the Global Partnership. Over decades, Russia accumulated significant amounts of nuclear material, waste and chemical weapons that pose a threat to the global security and environment. The UK together with its G8 partners and other donor countries, is assisting Russia destroy its stockpile of chemical weapons and make its nuclear legacy safe and secure.
This international collaboration with Russia was announced at Kananaskis in 2002 by G8 leaders (as the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Materials and Weapons of Mass Destruction) and the UK pledged to spend up to $750m over ten years principally in Russia to tackle nuclear and chemical weapon legacies of the Former Soviet Union.
The Embassy provides support and helps facilitate the implementation of the UK’s Global Threat Reduction Programmes (GTRP) projects in Russia, funded by the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change Ministry of Defence and other donors.
The major programmes in the UK Global Threat Reduction Partnership in Russia are:
- Management of spent nuclear fuel, dismantling of nuclear submarines and remediation work at former nuclear sites in North-West of Russia.
- Destruction of Chemical weapons.
- Physical protection of nuclear materials.
- Nuclear expertise work under UK-Russian Closed Nuclear Cities Partnership
