The primary role of the Defence Section in Moscow is to provide advice and support to the British Ambassador on defence-related matters. Consisting of both officers and non-commissioned officers from the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force, the Defence Section provides the point of contact for the Russian Ministry of Defence with the British Ministry of Defence and runs an active programme of bilateral military activities. This programme comprises both high-level visits and exchanges at lower levels, amongst the most visible aspects of which are visits by ships of the Russian Federation Navy to Royal Navy ports and vice versa. The Defence Section is also the conduit for contacts between the British defence industry and the Russian Federation.
